Design & Inspiration

Sprout is an eco-friendly company that specializes in growing Heirloom and Organic Seeds. This packaging design project specifically focuses on heirloom tomato seeds such as, the Arkansas Traveler, Azoychka, Aurora, Cherokee Purple, Beefsteak and Aunt Ruby’s German Green tomatoes. The design of both the primary and secondary packaging was inspired by the vibrant colors and organic shapes of these tomato variations.

Logotype Exploration

Initial Design Process

The main idea of the project was to focus on the history of these heirloom seeds and their organic nature. Because of this, there was a lot of experimentation with various handwritten and san-serif typefaces.

Chosen Typeface

The typeface “Merinda” was chosen because of the curves as well as the handwritten feel to the design. It was handwritten enough to where it was legible and also has a natural essence.

Experimentation

To bring out the idea of nature and growth, there was a lot of experimentation with the letter “T” (to create a visual representation of a sprout) and the letter “O” (representing the growth of a seedling).

Final Logotype

After various experimentation, the final logotype that was chosen was had a combination of both the letter “O” and “T” as a focal points. The “T” representing the sprout of a seed and the “O” representing the growth of a seed. Combining these two aspects is a representation of the importance of heirloom seeds, the roots that grow out of the seedling was made to connect to the sprout. The roots is not only depicting how deep the history of an heirloom seed is but also represents the strong connection between the seed and what is grown from it.

Primary & Secondary Packaging

Primary Seed Packaging

The idea behind the design of the primary packaging was to express the beauty behind each and every tomato seed within the package. Each individual packaging is a visual representation of each seed once it reaches full maturity.

Secondary Packaging

The secondary packaging aides in creating this long hexagon shape to contain all six of the primary packages. Due to this shape, it allows the product to be easily placed on shelves and is easily transportable. The elements on the packaging was designed so that the content wraps around the item and flows easily while reading. Due to the hexagon shape, three faces of the package is almost always visible and it allows consumers to grasp what is in the package no matter what side it is on.
